CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Denise gazed out the sliding glass door and took in the vista with a mixture of satisfaction and longing. The tops of the conifer trees fell away before her revealing the small settlement nestled near the banks of the Columbia River. It wasn’t the original Columbia River – that one was back on Earth and was much mightier than the modest body of water that flowed alongside the settlement – but the colonists had decided to use names from their home on Earth to describe the natural features of New America.

Ted Evans drove to the bus stop to pick up his girlfriend, Sally Robins, for the special weekend they’d been planning. They planned to stay at Ted’s parents’ cottage for the Labor Day weekend, but their parents didn’t know. Ted’s folks thought he was staying at a buddy’s place, but he didn’t know what Sally told her mom and dad. He only knew he was supposed to pick her up at the bus station.

Ryan wiped the sweat from his brow and glanced across the field to where the cheerleading squad was gathering up their purses and gear, preparing to call it a day. Even from that distance he could pick out Emily Watkins, his gorgeous girlfriend, as she stooped to retrieve her pompons. Emily was incredibly graceful, and Ryan could have remained where he was all day, just gazing at her.
