I'm tired of the hackers and spammers trying to get into the system. I've made it so that I now have to approve all new user accounts. I can tell you right now that users that insist on using a seemingly random sequence of letters and numbers will NOT have their requests approved. If you can't use something approaching a "normal" name then please don't bother to register here.

Bravo, Bob
I just came from BC, where there is a new user with that sort of login name (the random sequence of letters). That person has logged in about 6 times in the last 5 minutes, and I kept waiting for something to show up.
I used to like the anonymous ability on some of the site I visited, but having sen the way it's abused, I'm no longer in favor of it. I even have my doubts about the "Guest Reader" login here and on BC, but it hasn't proved to be the problem I thought it might.
Anyway, I trust you to be discrete in what information you require from new members, so I think this is a good idea.

It seems to be an epidemic. Two other sites I use have this same problem and I've come near to banning all Russian domains for the number of spammers and crackers that use ISPs there.
About 5% of my time is currently spent policing such crap and subtler forms of abuse, when it gets to 10% I go hunting for some countermeasure. Let's hope this is a summer fad, Bob, and that things get back to normal when the script kiddies are back in school this fall.
Hugs,
