My little task of leveling the thermostat didn't last very long. The furnace has been running more when it should have shut off and the fan has been running for hours at a time.

Today I decided to go to the local Wal-Mart and get a replacement thermostat. That finally seems to have fixed the problems. The furnace has been working properly for the past 6 hours or so and shows no signs of reverting to the previous bad behavior.

It cost about $20.00 for the thermostat and about an hour of my time to replace the old one with the new one. If it really does fix the problem it was a very cheap repair.
