Closing the book on Stardust?

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly version

Periodically I take a look at the stats for Stardust and wonder if it is worth keeping the site alive. As things are going now it is hard to justify the space it takes up on the server.

People are still posting stories. Not as many as other sites get but then I really don't want to get into the type of "one handed fiction" that a few other sites seem to thrive on. I always thought a site that aims for a higher class of stories and readers would thrive. You, my site users, have told me countless times that you appreciate the site and want it to stay. What's upsetting is that there are very few comments on the stories posted here. Yes, I know that many of the stories are also posted on other sites and many readers feel that posting a comment here is only duplicating their efforts on other sites. I suspect that I've lost more than a few authors posting here because of the lack of comments to their stories on this site.

Since I started Stardust I've had to deal with most people's assumption that Stardust is somehow an outgrowth of BC TopShelf. While Erin and I do work together to maintain out sites the basic operating goals are quite different. I'm trying to run a site that's a bit simpler to use and less much complex for most users and authors. The fact that we both use the same content management software does force some overall similarities for our sites but that's as far as it really goes.

Stardust has been online for 3 years and around 22 weeks and it still hasn't grown as much as I'd like it to have progressed by now. I'm not certain at this point that it will make it to 3 years, 25 weeks ans will be making some tough decisions within the next three weeks that will effect the future of Stardust.

Just a warning to readers and authors that changes are very likely coming.

Bob Arnold

Wel...

I can appreciate how you feel. It is a lot of work to keep a site going as well as Stardust has been kept. When Stardust fisrt came about it seems to be just the right mix of quality stories and less XXX stuff. I don't deride the triple X stuff it is just not my bag. As a reader I am also sorry that more good authors do not post here but then your quality has been kept high. Then again I can imagine there is some 'loyality' to some about BCTS and there should be but Stardust does represent something different at least for me. I would be one of the 'loyal' reader of Stardust to see it change or go away but then again I am only one person. I for one really hope that does not happen.

Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor.

I would miss the site

Hi Bob,
I check this website EVERY DAY looking to see who might have posted some little gem of a story that I know I will enjoy just because your site precludes stories I won't read. I hope you decide to keep it up and running,

I, Too, would really miss this site

This is a fabulous site. Stardust provides quality stories and a site we have confidence in. Thank you.

We, the readers, have let you down by not commenting on the stories as we should and as you have asked us to. If you do choose to close Stardust we have only our selves to blame. I hope you choose not to close the site.

Peace -
Pere

Future of Stardust

Bob, I'll also urge you to keep up Stardust.

Indeed, I haven't encountered many transgender story sites were I haven't dropped a story on account of objectionable content, and I have pretty liberal standards for what is acceptable, but many sites cross the line regularly. Not so with Stardust.

Stardust is a pre-eminent example of what I'd like a story site to be.

While the writing quality is a bit more variable than on, say, the Whatley Academy site, it is mostly quite good.

I have to admit, being a shy (or perhaps privacy paranoid) person, I haven't registered to comment. And, while I've started to comment a time or two, the requirerment for registration has put me off.

Alas, I have not been moved to comment since you have enabled Guest Reader comments, but I'm sure I will.

PS - I miss reading new Bob Arnold stories!

3 more weeks?

Hi Bob. You may not recall my user name, but I am one of those that have followed the site since you opened it. I encouraged you even back then to keep the site going with the higher class of reading material that does get posted here. I would hate to see Stardust close down, as I check it a couple of times a day to see what is going on. Come to think of it, I am probably one of those types that, if I do comment, may have done so if the story popped up on another site first. I truly appreciate your efforts to make good reading available to us, but you do what you have to. Who knows. If you are not here busting a gut, maybe you could take the time, and get relaxed enough to feel you could add another chapter to your own saga that you have poured your sweat (and heart and soul) into.

Hi Bob while i hope you do

Hi Bob

while i hope you do not decide to close Stardust i can fully understand why you might decide that the stats might leave you with little choice.

If you look around at the main TG story sites the one thing that strikes you most about Stardust is the feel of quality about the site and that is something i would be very sad to see vanish, I for one vist the site at least once a day and when i read a story always comment...I just wish others would do the same!!!

Kirri

Silly me!!

in my eagerness to make a comment i forgot to sign in so the above comment was shown as being from a guest reader... Not true, i,ll admit it, That was all my own work, But what i said still goes....I just wish more people took time out to read stories and most importantly COMMENT.

Kirri

Every good site going down is a loss

Especially if it is a site you register for the sole purpose to comment on stories.

It is really sad to hear the reason why it closes down.

It's not lack of funds, what would be admittedly sad too,
and it also isn't lack of time,

but it is lack of comments from the readers.

So Stardust goes down because all of us readers neglected to do right.
This is sad.

I should have posted more comments to stories from writers like JuliO,
who seems to live in the rain forest of creativity.
But every time I try to post a comment I feel like living in the Sahara of creativity.

Finding adequate words to comment on the stories is hard.
Posting just "God story, continue writing" seems dumb.

So all I can say is:
Bob, follow your heart and do what you feel is best.
I have exactly no right to right to tell you anything else...

more please

Maybe we should just Quote Charles Dickens's Oliver Twist and ask "More please"

Closing the Book on Stardust

I will feel sad if you have to shut down Stardust. This has been a quality site from day-one!

While there are not so many authors/stories as other sites the material on the site is top quality and it is not necessary to filter out the second rate stories that are not appreciated by the more discerning reader.

Please reconsider your thoughts to end the site ---- we would be losing yet another great supporter of TG fiction.

DowydB

We appreciate all your hard work

Bob,
I just want to express how much I appreciate all the hard work you have done to promote not just my stories, but those of all the other authors posted here. I hope the site continues as we are extremely fortunate to have some one so supportive of us and our community.
Much love,
Julie O

Stardust....

...will be missed.

As several have already noted, Stardust provides us all with a good quality site. I try to visit here daily because I know anything new on Stardust will prove to be a worthy read. But like others, I don't seem to comment enough and I am sorry for that.

Cumphy

Your site, your money, your call but you would be missed

Stardust is a place I go whn I want a quality TG story with a gentler theme.

FM and Story Site are valuable as huge sites with variety but much of the stories are not types I like. This is particualarly so of FM but then they are a catch all site and valuable for that,

Sapphires is great but semi dormant for now.
I love BC but even it is suffering a little due to it's sucess, IE the turnovr rate on new storys is very fast now.

You must decide if the cost in time and rsourcs is worth it to you, Bob. Please do not feel you ar unappreciated.

i check the site almost

i check the site almost everyday, but unfortunately i am also one of the people who don't comment. this is one of my favorite sites for reading since all of the stories are very good, and i would miss it if it was gone.

Bob, As others have said, it

Bob,

As others have said, it would be a great loss if Stardust would shut down. I've noticed the lack of comments here, and I too feel it's because of the cross postings. I know it's a tough decision to make, but it's yours and yours alone to make. If Stardust goes, it will leave a black-hole in our little universe.

stardust website closing

It would be a great loss for us readers. I found the site by chance and I haven't visited another since. I would have posted some comments but I can't log in because I never got a password. I really like the stories and I'm trying to read everything from the last page forward. I've almost made it. You have some fantastic authors here, yourself included. I hope more people will let you know how much we love the site. You've done such a great job with this site, its user friendly for us non-computer types. Whatever happens, great job and thank you for lots of enjoyable reading. Gwen

What of stories posted here only?

Will you send them elsewhere?

You should quit more often

Nothing like a kick in the pants to get the site moving again.

Hope you find happiness whatever you decide.

If it isn't fun... why do it? That's my motto.
